Please Stand Up For Doogie and Those Who Saved Him!

This is a VERY sad story, but it must be shared. People need to be aware that this sort of horrible cruelty is happening, and that the authorities are not doing enough, if anything, about it.

Here is a synopsis of the story:
Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested September 11, 2006 for helping a dying chained dog named Doogie who could not stand in East Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Tammy's statement: "I made a hard decision; I could not have lived with myself or looked myself in the eye if I were such a coward as to leave Doogie lying there dying on the ground for fear of what would happen to me. I see this case as a travesty against justice...the true perpetrators of a crime are the people who left Doogie to lie there dying for three days without doing right by him. I am very saddened that we live in a society where people have to be afraid to do the right thing, to help those in need, whether that need be human or animal. Arrests such as mine are a pitiful statement for America, and I ask all dog lovers to stand with me to insist that all charges against me are dropped and charges of animal cruelty are instead placed against the Arnolds of East Freedom, PA. The Arnolds who left Doogie to die. This video truly speaks for itself, and for Doogie. I did what was morally right; I stand by my decision to help him and will be proud of it until my dying day. No one can take that from me."
You can read the full story, updates, and see more photos and the video of Tammy arriving to see Doogie and taking him away on the Dogs Deserve Better site. You can also contribute to Tammy's legal defense fund through PayPal.

Please call and email and forward this on to all of your animal lover friends. Here's a question: if this had been a child, how would the reaction been different?
Tammy took Doogie directly to the vet, who wrote a letter as to Doogie's condition.

Stand up for Doogie. He couldn't stand up for himself.

  1. The video made Mum really sad.
First because of the situation of a dog in such a condition being left outside unassisted. Second, because the dog's arthritis problems made Mum remember Donna in her last weeks, when Donna could not stand even to do her 'things' outside. At that time, knowing that Donna would not be long with us (both because of the arthritis and because of lung and liver cancer), she put Donna in her bedroom and gave her all the attention she could while she got the courage to take the decision of putting her to sleep. She would never leave Donna outside, and chained like they did with Doggie.

  2. Hey, Indy
Well done for telling people about this. I have blogged it today, hope to help spread the word. I was abandoned myself and I got lucky: Mum is in tears after watching the video.

  3. Hey Indy,

    I am without words :-(

Poor Doogie - and Tammy deserves a medal, not an arrest.

  5. Anyone with any means of compassion would have done the same. I hope people will write letters and contact the newspapers.

  6. I wonder if this took place near my human pet's hometown. (She's from Hopewell, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, and Freedom is a local town nearby.)

I'm terribly confused as to how anyone could think to arrest this woman when she clearly is not the one wrong. How do the owners of this poor animal get away without any repurcussion for their crime? How sad, how sad...I hope justice is done in the end.

  7. We hope the angel Tammy is freed to provide comfort to other animals. We wish there would not be other animals that will need her comfort but some humans are too stupid to deserve to live much less have pets.

  8. Poor Doggie. Tammy was doing the right thing. How awful to be arrested for doing what is right. What is the world coming to that doggies are made to suffer so and that people are punished for trying to help?
