Synchronized Siberians

Mom was watching me on the web cam for my day care and she caught several shots of my and my friend Canyon, the black and white Siberian Husky, doing the same thing at the same time.

I'm not telling her we were practicing our drills for when HULA takes over the world!

PUPPPIES!

As you all know, I LOVE PUPPIES! I mean, I like to play with them for small periods of time. I wouldn't want one living with me, so don't get any ideas mom and dad! Anyway, Harnessed to Hope took in two Siberian Huskies on October 17th, and as soon as they saw Lucy, the female, they could see that she was pregnant and quite far along.
click to view slideshowBoth Lucy and her mate Desi were rescued from a puppymill. The man who had bred them gave them away. We're sure he didn't realize Lucy was pregnant, or he would have kept her to sell the pups. Because he didn't know she was pregnant, he didn't increase her food. Lucy came into rescue 30 pounds underweight and almost ready to give birth. She had 7 healthy pups on October 21st.
The pups are growing and their eyes have opened! Lucy is a wonderful mother, and is just so proud of her babies. You can just see it in these photos! She has also been great about letting people handle her babies.
Lucy is still underweight, and due to the worms she has, she has had trouble gaining any weight. She is nursing and has also had diarrhea in the past few days. The pups are now old enough that she can be wormed with Panacure, but she will also need to be treated for Lyme disease and spayed once she is healthy. You can see more recent photos of the pups here.
Lucy's 7 pups will all need the usual puppy care and check ups, and will all need to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated before they are adopted. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

I'm 9 Years Old Today!

Today is my birthday! Mom took me for a nice long walk when she got home. Then we went to PetSmart and she bought me a bag of chicken jerky and a bag of duck jerky! It's hard to believe that I was born 9 years ago today. Here are some of my puppy pictures to commemorate the occasion. These were taken during the first week that mom had me.

Tomorrow I get to go to school and party with my friends. And I'm aging very well. Nobody can believe my age. They say I'm way too young and energetic to be 9!
Here is a video of mom singing me Happy Birthday. See how I sang along with her? And I gave a shout out to all my peeps!

Louie, Male Siberian Husky at Montgomery County Humane Society

My mom went to visit Louie a few weeks ago at the Montgomery County Humane Society in Rockville, Maryland. Louie was an owner surrender. His previous owners had to move and could not take him with them. They told the shelter that Louie is 10 years old, but the kennel tech did not think he was that old, and my mom didn't either. Here is what my mom wrote about her visit with Louie:
He is on the small side, but he really looks like a purebred Sibe to me. And he acts like one too. He was an OS, his owners gave him up because they were moving. His coat is very dry, and his teeth are worn and have a lot of tarter. I think he's been on a really cheap, low quality kibble all his life. He also seems to have sensitive skin. The skin on his inner thighs and tummy is very red and irritated, and he's been scratching at it. He has also been licking at his left rear foot, the skin between two of the toes is very red and irritated. He let me look at it with no problem, and same with the skin on his thighs and tummy. He seems to have kennel cough, it's been going around at the shelter. The kennel tech made a note and will ask that he be started on antibiotics. Other than that he is in good shape. He was very excited when we came up to his kennel and started jumping up. He was VERY excited when walking out toward the yard and was wagging his tail. Another kennel tech was bringing a dog back in from the yard and was walking toward us. The other dog barked and lunged at Louie. I watched Louie closely and he just jumped back, but his tail was still wagging. He didn't so much as growl. The other kennel tech backed up and let us go out and Louie walked right past the other dog.
He was very excited for the first few minutes we were outside and was pulling very hard, but he calmed down after about 5 minutes. He was very interested in everything outside, so I walked him around on the leash a bit. I sat down and he stood with his tail near me, so I started petting his back, and rump, and ran my hands down his lets. I ran my hand over his tail. He didn't seem to mind or care at all. I then moved up to his neck and was petting his neck and sides. I pulled him into a "safe hug" or vet tech hold. He started to wiggle a bit, then stopped and just let me hug him for about 7 seconds. He loves to be petted. I petted along his belly, and that's when I started looking at the red skin on his belly and thighs. I picked up one of his front paws and he looked down as if to say "what are you doing with my foot?" but didn't mind at all.
He does not seem to know sit or shake, but he is very sweet. After about 5 minutes he calmed down and I walked him around the yard some more. He was very good on the leash at that point and barely pulled at all. He did very well on the shelter evaluation. They said kids 15+, but I don't think children younger than that would be a problem. They didn't give any details as to why they chose that age limit for him, but since I was able to touch him all over, grab him in a hug, and pick up his foot with no problem, I don't see why he couldn't live with kids younger than that.
I offered him chicken jerky treats several times and he didn't want them, so I don't think he'll have any food guarding issues. The eval said he didn't show any during their test.
So far Louie has no adoption applications. He is a very sweet boy, so if you know of anyone who is looking for a dog like Louie, please point them to the Montgomery County Humane Society. This is Louie's PetHarbor.com listing.

Let Dick's Sporting Goods Know What You Think About Vick

Dick's Sporting Goods is currently not stocking Michael Vick's jersey because they have not seen enough demand from Eagles fans, according to Bloomberg.com. Their chief marketing officer says that they have no problem stocking the jersey if the demand is there. The franchise is tracking phone calls, queries on it's web site and inquiries at Philadelphia area stores to gauge the demand for Vick's jersey. You can contact Dick's Sporting Goods Customer Service at 1.877.846.999.

My Weekend

Friday I went to day care, but grandma and grandpa picked me up in the afternoon and took me to their house! Mom had packed my dinner and it was in the fridge at school, so we took it to grandma and grandpa's house and I ate my dinner there. On they way to their house, we stopped at some friends of theirs to pick something up. They were babysitting a little boy named Martin that I met once before. Martin is really little, but he is not afraid of me at all. He came right up and stood next to me and put his arm around my neck.

Mom and dad went to a concert Friday night, and wouldn't be home until late. They went to see Matt Nathanson and O.A.R. Mom and dad are big fans of both.
Before Matt Nathanson came on, they were showing text messages and photos on the big screens. Dad sent a picture of me, and right when it showed up on the screens, a whole bunch of people started cheering. Dad said "Listen, they're cheering for Indy!" Mom said "Well, Matt Nathanson just came out on the stage." Dad said "No, it's for Indy!"
Mom was happy because they ended the show by singing "With a Little Help from My Friends" with Matt Nathanson - hearing a Beatles song always makes mom happy.

My Sunday Walk

Mom started to take me for a walk with Maddie today. Since we get along so well mom tried walking us on a coupler, so she only had to hold one leash. Here's a picture of us.

It was going okay for a few minutes until I raised my leg to pee on a bush, and Maddie walked right into the stream. Then she tried to get away from it and she was actually under me while I was still peeing. Then she backed out of her harness. Then mom took us both back to our house so she could clean Maddie up and spray her harness with Nature's Miracle. Then she got out a martingale collar and another leash for Maddie and we did go for a walk.
We saw this BIG moth!
Then Maddie came back to our house to rest and drink some water while her harness finished drying, and then we took her back to grandma and grandpa's house. It was a big day and we're all tired from the long walk in the heat.
